Primary School Learning Support Assistant (LSA)
Duties & Responsibilities:
LSAs to our Special Needs Program are full or part-time members of the Learning Support Department. Their role is to work alongside specialist, classroom and subject teachers and therapists, ensuring every student has their learning needs met and can access mainstream curriculum activities where possible. LSAs collaborating as part of the team work closely with specialist teachers to ensure student programs are well coordinated and strategies consistent to maximize student success.
In addition, LSAs working in this program are expected to engage in professional development opportunities and apply their learning to everyday classroom practice.
It is a demanding role that involves:
- Establishing a caring and nurturing relationship with students.
- Establishing effective working relationships with class / subject teachers.
- Developing professional relationships and effective communication with parents.
- Developing a broad knowledge of different disabilities, learning difficulties and curriculum areas.
- Being aware of the needs of individual students, using specific strategies and anticipating the implications of these needs in a variety of teaching and learning situations.
Learning Support Assistants assist teachers to meet students’ needs by:
- Being punctual to all timetabled lessons and participating fully, at the direction of the class teacher.
- Follow strategies from Individual Plans for students to meet individualised goals.
- Adapting tasks and helping to prepare materials and resources.
- Differentiating language or reinforcing an activity.
- Clarifying or explaining content and instructions, either through visual support, written or orally.
- Ensure that students are able to use equipment correctly in a way that supports their learning.
- Facilitate positive behaviour and interactions between students.
- Encourage students to develop independence and responsibility for their own learning where appropriate.
- Communicating closely with parents and taking guidance from specialist staff on best ways to support families.
- Accompany and assist students and staff on community involvement experiences. School trips, work experience and whole school activities such as cultural celebrations, productions and inter-school events.
- Participate in other school duties and activities as directed by the Head of Phase or Head of School
As well as all above, we are looking for Learning Support Assistant 1:1 which is a more demanding and potentially exhausting role. We require potential candidates to be;
- Enthusiastic and committed to expanding professionally and personally eg. language, physically and emotionally.
- Willing to address and manage sensitively personal needs of students.
- Encouraging and motivating in their attitude when supporting student learning and development through the day
